Polarstern Een Jaar In Noordpoolijs

In het kader van de "Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC)" zal in september een internationale groep van 600 wetenschappers uit 17 landen op de ijsbreker Polarstern zich laten vast vriezen in het ijs van de Noordpool om een jaar onderzoek te doen. Voor het project worden ook nog vliegtuigen en andere ijsbrekers ingezet. Het is daarmee de grootste expeditie ooit in het Noordpoolgebied.

Svalbard Forel Gevonden Van 238 Miljoen Jaar Oud

Opgravingen in Svalbard gedurende meer dan 15 jaar hebben verrassende ontdekkingen opgeleverd over de ontwikkeling van het leven.
Een groep vrijwilligers, wetenschappers en studenten hebben een fossiel van een 238 miljoen jaar oude forel gevonden aan de voet van de berg op Marmierfjellet, Svalbard. Er worden veel skeletten in Svalbard gevonden, maar deze is ongebruikelijk met zijn acht tot tien meter. Wat ook ongebruikelijk is, is dat het veel ouder is dan de grote skeletten die eerder werden gevonden.

Antarctica Project Iceman

Het is geen officiële wedstrijd, maar een gewone man die iets uitzonderlijks doet. In februari/maart 2020 gaat de Deen Anders Hofman een volledige triatlon doen bij Marguerite Bay, Antarctica. Hij gaat de 3,9km zwemmen in het ijswater, 180km fietsen in de sneeuw en 42,2km lopen op het ijs. Je kan de voorbereidingen van Anders Hofman volgen op de website en op Instagram. Een van die voorbereidingen was een halve triatlon op Svalbard die Anders Hofman op 15 mei 2019 met succes uitvoerde.

Krill Bij Antarctica

Krill zijn garnaalachtige zeedieren die leven in de zee rond Antarctica. Ze zijn voornamelijk een voedselbron voor walvissen, pinguïns, robben en vissen.
Nieuw onderzoek wijst uit dat krill verschillende gebieden zoekt in de verschillende fases van hun levenscyclus. Het verzamelen van de gegevens voor het onderzoek naar krill loopt ondertussen over 41 jaar.
Krill larven komen vooral voor in het ondiepe water rond het Antarctisch Schiereiland. Groeiende larven worden dichter bij de kust gevonden.
Het gebied is een doel voor de visserij. Omdat krill de basis is van de voedselketen bij Antarctica is er nood aan regionaal management om de populatie van krill te beschermen.

Koolmijnbedrijf Store Norske wil Mijn 7 op Svalbard nog open houden tot 2040. Mijn 7 is door Store Norske een zelfstandig bedrijf gemaakt met de naam Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani. Er werken momenteel 50 mensen en vorig jaar maakte Mijn 7 nog 10 miljoen Noorse kronen winst.

Saildrone Zelfstandig Rond Antarctica

Saildrone SD-1020 is erin geslaagd zelfstandig rond Antarctica te varen. De onbemande drone had voor de 22000 kilometer 196 dagen nodig. Saildrone SD-1020 had een camera en sensoren aan boord om gegevens te verzamelen over het klimaat op plaatsen waar nog niets was geregistreerd. Er zijn nog twee andere drones (SD-1022 en SD-1023) onderweg.

2019 IAATO Antarctic Fellows

De International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) en de Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) hebben deze week de "2019 IAATO Antarctic Fellows" bekend gemaakt. Het zijn Martina Mascioni van de Universiteit van La Plata, Argentinië en Daniela Cajiao Vargas van de Universiteit van Madrid, Spanje. Beiden zijn doctoraat studenten en zullen door de IAATO gesponsord worden in hun verder onderzoek.

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) 2019 Visiting Scholar Applications Open

The 2019 SCAR Visiting Scholar scheme is open for applications!

SCAR Visiting Scholarships are for mid- to late-career stage scientists and academics (at least 5 years after completing their PhD) who are involved in Antarctic research, providing the opportunity for them to undertake a short-term visit (1 to 4 weeks) to an institute(s) in another SCAR member country, to provide training and mentoring.

The core purpose of the Scheme is to build capacity in countries with smaller or less-developed Antarctic research programmes. Visits can be either to smaller and developing programmes or from smaller and developing programmes, so the capacity building process can be proposed in either way. The scheme is for any scientists and academics whose research contributes to SCAR's objectives, as embodied in the Science Groups and Scientific Research Programmes.

The scheme provides awards of up to USD $5000 each, covering the cost of an international return flight and some contribution towards living expenses for the visiting period. Full information on the scheme, including details of the application process and assessment criteria is available on the Visiting Scholar Detailed Information page.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 14th August 2019.

Queries about the scheme should be sent to info@scar.org and an online form is available which can be used to ask questions about the application process, required documentation and eligibility etc. anonymously if preferred.
