IAATO Antarctic Fellowship 2024

De International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), de Raad van Managers van Nationale Antarctische Programma’s (COMNAP), Het Wetenschappelijk Comité voor Antarctisch Onderzoek (SCAR) en de Commissie voor het behoud van de levende hulpbronnen in de Antarctische wateren (CCAMLR) werken samen om getalenteerde onderzoekers, wetenschappers, ingenieurs, milieumanagers en andere professionals aan het begin van hun carrière te ondersteunen.

Het doel van de jaarlijkse prijzen is om de internationale capaciteit en samenwerking op gebieden als klimaat, biodiversiteit, natuurbehoud, geesteswetenschappen en astrofysica-onderzoek te versterken door jaarlijkse financieringsmogelijkheden te bieden.

Watermeloen Sneeuw

Om sneeuw te laten vallen, moet er vocht in de atmosfeer aanwezig zijn. Sneeuwstormen zijn ook sterk afhankelijk van de temperatuur, maar niet noodzakelijkerwijs van de temperatuur die we op de grond voelen. Sneeuw ontstaat wanneer de atmosferische temperatuur op of onder het vriespunt ligt, 0°C. Als de grondtemperatuur op of onder het vriespunt ligt, zal de sneeuw de grond bereiken. De sneeuw kan echter nog steeds de grond bereiken als de grondtemperatuur boven het vriespunt ligt, als de omstandigheden goed zijn. In dit geval zullen sneeuwvlokken beginnen te smelten als ze deze hogere temperatuurlaag bereiken; het smelten zorgt voor verdampingskoeling, waardoor de lucht direct rond de sneeuwvlok afkoelt. Deze afkoeling vertraagt het smelten. Als algemene regel geldt echter dat er zich geen sneeuw zal vormen als de grondtemperatuur minstens 5°C bedraagt.

"We are delighted to announce that the 46 Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) and the 26 Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) Meeting will be hosted at Kochi, India from May 20th to 30th, 2024. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), an autonomous research institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India is pleased to host the meeting. With an expected attendance of over 350 delegates from 60+ countries, the ATCM will bring together participants from around the world to engage in crucial discussions on Antarctic research and governance."

National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC): Nieuwe Gegevens

IceBridge ATM Waveform Derived Snow Effective Grain Radius, versie 1, is nu beschikbaar bij het NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). Deze dataset bevat schattingen van de oppervlaktekorrelgrootte van sneeuw en ijs, afgeleid van golfvormmetingen van NASA's Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) instrumentatie met smalle en brede strook. De ruimtelijke omvang omvat het Noordpoolgebied, waarbij de meeste gegevens betrekking hebben op de Groenlandse ijskap.

Verdrag Van Antarctica: Verbeteringen Aan Het Informatie-uitwisselingssysteem (EIES)

Het afgelopen jaar heeft het Secretariaat verschillende wijzigingen, verbeteringen en updates aangebracht in zijn Electronic Information Exchange System (EIES), de centrale database die door de Partijen bij het Antarctisch Verdrag wordt gebruikt om informatie uit te wisselen over hun activiteiten op Antarctica.

Een verbetering van het EIES is dat de database voor de milieueffectrapportage (EIA) nu een link biedt van de definitieve alomvattende milieu-evaluatie (CEE)-records naar bijbehorende documenten, zoals rapporten van intersessionele contactgroepen om concept-CEE's te beoordelen. Bovendien is het hoofdmenu van het EIES opnieuw ingedeeld, zodat alle secties nu zichtbaar zijn, ongeacht de geselecteerde periode voor rapportage.

XI SCAR Open Science Conference, Pucón, Chile, 2024 “Antarctic Science: Crossroads for a New Hope”

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Open Science Conference 2024 “Antarctic Science: Crossroads for a New Hope” will be held in Pucón, Chile from 19-23 August 2024. The conference will a feature a comprehensive programme of plenary lectures, mini-symposia, parallel sessions, panel discussions, posters and various opportunities for social activities and excursions in and around beautiful Pucón.

The Open Science Conference, established over 20 years ago, has in many ways become the premier activity of SCAR that supports its mission to promote and facilitate international Antarctic and Southern Ocean science. These biennial meetings have become fertile ground for the exchange of the latest and highest profile Antarctic research outcomes and a place where future collaborations are born.
